All About

Mark Shepard and the Flute

Mark first fell in love with the flute in 1972. After that, he played flute professionally as a member of a performing trio, as an accompanist to modern dancers, and as a solo theater musician. He also made and sold simple flutes in both bamboo and plastic plumbing pipe.

Mark’s books on flutes, flute playing, and flutemaking have been both unique and influential. How to Love Your Flute was the only flute book featured by The Whole Earth Catalog. Flutecraft was the first professional guide on making side‑blown bamboo flutes.

Mark now lives in Bellingham, Washington. Though dental problems have kept him away from flute playing and making since the 1980s, he is pleased to make his earlier work available through his books and on the Web.
